The article reads as the following:
Brotherhood and service to the band have alls been the goals for KKΨ. Communication is the key to success in reaching those goals, communication not only within one's chapter but between his chapter and others in the district and the nation. Ever cognizant of this need for brotherhood between chapters, Alpha Omicron here at Texas Tech gave the nation in 1959 a means of transferring their ideas to each other in the form of the "Traveling Baritone." Now some 14 years later, AO has come up with another medium for the exchange of fellowship and ideas within the District VI - the "Traveling Bass Drum!"
The "drum" is the brainchild of Brother Richard Broyles, District VI president, who thought it would be a great idea to draw the district chapters closer together. This idea went into a committee for further study. The committee then trouped into the instrument building and found an old bass drum carcass.
At the next Chapter meeting, the committee brought in the "results" of their investigation. We all said, "Great idea, a traveling bass drum! Now, to whom do we give it?" Fortunately, we had an upcoming road trip to Houston-that would solve the problem. We would "roll" the drum to its first stop with the Brothers of Beta Sigma at the University of Houston.
The night before we left for Houston was a hectic one for the members of the art and design committee as they readied the drum for the trip. Finishing touches, such as decals, were added to the drum heads; and the log book was prepared to record the drum's travels. After that, the "Traveling Bass Drum" was tucked safely in a case ready for its maiden voyage.
After our pre-game rehearsal in Rice Stadium, it was time to initiate the passing of the "Traveling Bass Drum." In a brief ceremony, AO's Chapter and District officers presented the officers and Brothers of Beta Sigma with the new symbol of friendship.
Brothers, the rest is now up to you! From AO's first step, let these journeys continue for thousands of miles. Spread good will and share your ideas for building better bands. Most of all, keep the "baritone" traveling and the "bass drum" rolling for brotherhood!
